This book’s text and illustrations are nothing special, but it does teach counting by 2’s. This may be one of my favorite counting books of all time. None of the large, strong animals are successful – but they laugh when the "weak and puny" antelope wants to try. This is a folktale about a peaceful kingdom of jungle animals; King Cheetah must find a wise animal to be his successor.
This two-color approach produces a visual result that shows both the counted set and the full set, making the mathematical relationship between "9 of 12" immediately visible on the page. Children who count first and then try to color the correct number often lose track of which objects they counted, leading to inaccurate results. The umbrella page (7 umbrellas, count and color exactly 7) and the dresses page (7 dresses, count and color exactly 7) both target the same number but with completely different visual content, giving children variety while reinforcing the same quantity.
If you teach kindergarten or first grade, I recommend writing one of the rhymes on large chart paper and using it for shared reading. However, I think it’s brilliant (and because I make the book lists, it’s included!). Lynn Munsinger’s illustrations steal the show in this fun book about hungry monsters who keep a boy awake. But my Four couldn’t get enough of it, and now I love it, too. I didn’t actually like this one, but I’m including it because my Four loved it. The duck stays stuck in the muck."
